Why does it take a talent show to find Leona?

I apologise if people have a problem with The X Factor, but I love pretty much every reality show I've ever seen, and I especially love singing talent shows. It's car crash TV in the early stages, and then later enjoyable on multiple levels. Every now and again on these sort of shows someone comes along who really does blast everyone else off the stage, and finally the X Factor has found that person.

Leona Lewis is, by far and away, the greatest talent ever seen on any TV singing contest. When you hear her sing, frankly, you wonder why on earth she needs to be on a show like that. YouTube cannot do her voice the credit it truly deserves, but even if you hate these talent shows, watch her, she is effortless, you'd think she'd been a professional for years.

Hmm. If you are half way talented musician you have maybe three choices if you want to have a career - slog your way around a selection of grotty pubs etc and then advance to third or fourth on the bill to a bigger name, focus on your look rather than sound and try to get a record deal, or go for one of these talent types shows.

With the two PR routes, a musician may well have 15 minutes of fame, but most of them tend to fade out very quickly, as their audience outgrows them when their tastes change and / or the next manufactured singer / band comes along.

I much prefer the whole grotty pub experience for music to CDs, arenas or whatever, but there are fewer and fewer venues putting on /original/ live music, as it just isn't the draw that it was, sad to say. So, the pub / club circuit is harder and harder for musos to make anything approaching a living from and we end up with one of the most vicious of vicious circles.

And I prefer the Joplin take on 'Summertime'....

I would argue that Will Young was a great talent (he can also act and can write his own music) and he was found on a similar show.

Also, Lemarr was found on "Fame Academy" (although e only came third !

But yes, I agree with what you are saying.

Too much virtuoso and shouting. Give it me nice and gentle...not blast my socks off. Summertime don't need so much perzazz, just melodic lazy seduction.

In fairness the point I was making was not about liking her or not. It was about her raw talent and singing ability, which she has in huge amount.

Being liked and being talented do not have to go together after all. I for one would never buy her records, but I can spot that she is a ridiculously good singer none the less.

Agree she's class but I'm voting for Ben myself. Unlike Leona he's a genuine one-off.

I agree with Paul - I see Leona and Ben both getting into the final, and my own preference is for Ben. However, let the best man/woman win!
